Why Website Accessibility Matters (And Not Just Because the Law Says So)
It’s about building a web that works for everyone.
When the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners set out to create a new consumer-facing portal, they weren’t just looking for a website—they needed a digital front door to the state’s vast network of public libraries. So we rolled up our sleeves and got to work.
We built the new site in WordPress, giving MBLC a flexible, user-friendly platform that could handle a wide range of features—and a whole lot of data. At the heart of the project was a technical challenge: creating tools that could help patrons across the state discover what their local libraries have to offer.
The result? A dynamic, mobile-friendly site that includes a statewide event calendar, an interactive library directory, and an inventory of the “library of things”—from telescopes to sewing machines—that libraries have available for lending. We also tackled a complex search function that allows users to explore resources across the entire network of Massachusetts libraries, making it easier than ever to connect residents with the tools, events, and information they need.
With this new consumer portal, the MBLC isn’t just modernizing access—they’re making it easier for every Massachusetts resident to discover the full value of their local library.
